DIY How to Coarse Texture Paint Subwoofer

  • Built a ported 2.5 cubic feet box for the JBL S2 Series S2-1224 subwoofer driver. S2-1224 sub driver has an impedance selector that allows switching between 2 and 4 Ohms, providing flexible installation options for car audio enthusiasts and professionals.
I was running out of fresh 3/4" MDF sheets so I cut to pieces and sandwiched a 1/2" MDF sheet. And I even almost run out of truck bed liner spray paint too. As you can see the coating is not even. This project also put the Makita MLT100 table saw in action.
    Video timeline:
00:00 - Unboxing the massive JBL S2-1224 subwoofer.
00:14 - Calculating thiele small parameters to get enclosure volume and port requirements using Box-Port Design II on PC.
00:28 - TinkerCad design and layout for a 2.5 cuft subwoofer enclosure. Link www.tinkercad.com/things/cKyKoJeps1f
00:35 - Cutting, gluing, clamping, and sealing of all MDF cut panels into an enclosure.
02:04 - Subwoofer cutout hole using a router with DIY circle cutting jig.
02:30 - Sawing the aero port 4" diameter PVC pipe into a required length using a hacksaw.
02:45 - Ceramic bowl is used to flare one end of the fire heated PVC port.
03:48 - Cutting and gluing MDF bracing for the PVC port inside the enclosure.
04:06 - Round the bracing edges using a roundover router bit for a smoother air flow inside the subwoofer enclosure.
04:30 - Cut a square hole for the speaker terminal cup.
04:57 - Strengthen the enclosure by driving wood screws. Use a drill guide to get a perfect 90 degree pilot holes. Used a larger drill bit in drilling the counter sinks.
06:06 - Round all enclosure edges using a palm router.
06:25 - Sand with an 80 grit sand paper.
06:40 - Paint a wooden primer paint. Lacquer primer is best. I had bad experience with flat wall enamel paint. It poorly sticks to MDF.
06:48 - Cover and patch uneven surfaces using a body filler or plastic surface putty then sand again using 120 grit sand paper.
06:57 - A can of Samurai spray paint 2k07 black epoxy truck bed liner is just enough for a 2.5 cuft box.
07:25 - Top coat with a quick drying acrylic lacquer clear spray paint.
08:00 - Assemble all components together.
08:10 - Secure plastic port and PVC pipe with generous amount of hot melt glue.
08:30 - Use only 12 AWG pure copper speaker wire for quality and looks.
08:35 - Solder and crimp pure copper terminal lugs for speaker connectors.
09:50 - M6 T nuts and hex head bolts will fit perfectly in JBL S2-1224 subwoofer mounting screw holes.
10:10 - Stick the included rubber seal strip to ensure an airtight no leak subwoofer box.
