...it's been a handy trick. By running the gain higher and the AVR subwoofer trim lower, you are essentially turning up the subwoofer's amplifier power, effectively getting more bang for your buck. Literally.
Keep in mind that you may reach the limits of your subs, and need to back it down. You may also have issues with the auto on feature (no problems with either the SVS or Outlaw subs for me), so it may not be a free lunch in some cases.
Overall, it's the way I like to run subwoofers.
Going the other direction, as I discussed in my apartment video ( youtu.be/bb5iuKq67d0 ) reduces dynamics, limits amplifier power, and reduces bass bleed-over for neighboring apartments.
